Why are we still starting every conversation with "So, what do you do?"

Let’s be real: "What do you do?" is usually just shorthand for "How much respect should I give you?". Since we're starting this community to challenge these very kinds of traditions, we have a different question:

If you weren't allowed to mention your job title or how you make money, how would you describe yourself to a stranger?
