Former Intel chief Pat Gelsinger: ‘I’ve been called here for a purpose’

Former Intel chief Pat Gelsinger discusses the implementation of the 2022 Chips Act, his new role leading a Christian AI platform, and the potential impact of quantum computing on the industry.
He speaks of a “decay . . . deeper and harder than I’d realised”. In the five years before he returned, “not a single product was delivered on schedule”. “Basic disciplines” had been lost. “It’s like, wow, we don’t know how to engineer anymore!” It then took “a bit longer” than expected for Intel to crack its 18A manufacturing technology, critical for showing it could go toe-to-toe with TSMC.
In a sign of how far Intel had fallen, the Taiwanese giant started manufacturing some of Intel’s own chips around the time Gelsinger took over, impacting margins. His simultaneous warnings about over-reliance on Taiwanese factories strained the relationship, with TSMC’s founder publicly calling Gelsinger “a bit rude”.
Too poignant of an observation for many US companies…
