Solar Storm Radiation Issue Impacts 6000 Planes

Airbus has identified a critical issue with its A320 series aircraft, including A319, A320, and A321 models, where intense solar storms could corrupt flight control data, potentially causing pilots to lose control. Approximately 6,000 of these popular single-aisle planes require immediate maintenance. The issue came to light after a JetBlue flight made an emergency landing in Tampa, Florida, following a sudden altitude drop, resulting in injuries to about 15 passengers. Airbus has issued an alert to airlines, and the European Union's airworthiness directive mandates these repairs before the planes can resume passenger flights. Most repairs can be completed in about two hours, with American Airlines expecting to finish the majority of its updates by Sunday, while Delta Air Lines anticipates completing its work by Saturday morning.
