Anglo-Saxon girl had West African grandfather
Archaeological findings reveal that youths buried in Anglo-Saxon cemeteries in England carried West African DNA, indicating a more interconnected and diverse society than previously thought. The discovery suggests significant migration and movement during the Anglo-Saxon era.
DNA testing on a girl buried in an Anglo-Saxon grave in around 650CE found that her “paternal grandfather was 100% West African… a match for people living in what is Nigeria today”.
