Now Arriving: A New Theory of In-Flight Turbulence
Dr. Bjorn Birnir, a leading turbulence expert, has developed an advanced model to better understand and predict turbulence, aiming to make air travel safer. His research, published in Physical Review Research, could improve airplane design and meteorological forecasts, addressing the growing concern over severe turbulence as climate change intensifies.
To better understand in-flight turbulence, physicists have developed a new model that unifies two distinct frameworks: Lagrangian (particle-following) and Eulerian (fixed-point) mechanics. This could lead to better forecasts and aircraft design.
