Is the study of philosophy a fools errand? Is it just an egocentric desire to be right or intelligent, masquerading as a virtuous discipline?

This is coming from someone who earned a degree in philosophy and does not reflect my own perspective per se—but it’s thought provoking to debate the value of philosophy itself. What are your thoughts?
