Cape Town is HOT right now
Recently arrived back in Thailand after 2 brilliant months in Cape Town.
These are my take aways.
The place is beautiful
Cape Town is gorgeous. Like seriously stunning. Not sure I have been anywhere so beautiful. The drive in past Table Mountain and along the seafront at Camps Bay and along Chapmans Peak is just WOW. Especially at sunset.
December is perfect
We arrived in November and the weather right through into January was perfect. Hot sunny days with blue skies around 26ºC. Not humid. You can actually be active and get and about during the day without sweating to death (unlike Asia).
It's getting POPULAR
The areas along the Atlantic Seaboard (like Seapoint, Clifton and Camps Bay) were FULL of travelers and nomads. Cafes and restos were full and beaches packed for sunset. This also has an impact on the cost of living...
Airbnb prices are increasing
Cost of Airbnbs can be ridiculous in comparison with the cost of living. Cape Town is generally really cheap to live with food and drink comparative to Asia. However the rent (especially along the desirable Atlantic Seaboard) can be extremely high. Easily on par with big Europe or US cities.
You need to be careful
As stunning as Cape Town is you do need to keep your wits about you. Especially in the main city and suburbs and when out and about after dark. Petty crime and robberies can be common but many are opportunistic. The general rule of thumb is always take an Uber after dark and be aware of your surroundings. Keep valuables out of sight especially if in an unfamiliar or darkly lit area.
The food and wine is amazing
As you'd expect the wine in Cape Town is amazing and affordable, with famous regions like Constantia and Stellenbosch nearby. But the food was also very good and cheap. I had some of the best steak in my life here and of course the BBQ (braai) scene is unreal. Steaks, burgers, sausages and of course local staples like bunny chow and the famous gatzby sandwich. You won't go hungry.
It's an active city
Everyone in Cape Town seems very active. From the constant stream of joggers along the waterfront to the hikers tackling the surrounding mountains and hills. There is a ton of water sports, paragliders, padel courts, gyms, bike rides etc. If you are an outdoors/active person then you will love Cape Town!
I have attached some pics I grabbed while there but would love to hear some other opinions about Cape Town or happy to answer any questions anyone might have. Just make sure its on your list of destinations to visit in the near future 😋
