AI Detection Tools
What is the skill - Use tools to help detect whether content is AI Generated
Why is it a Life Skill - AI from inflammatory bots is clogging the arteries of social media and confusing us with fake and misleading content. It is fanning the flames of discord in our society and it's got to stop. This is one simple step you can take to protect yourself from bad actor influences.
My Review of Free AI Detection Tools
Ok, I've been down a rabbit hole this morning about AI detectors. These are tools that you can use to scan a piece of text and evaluate whether it is AI generated or not. I looked at 4 free tools: Grammarly, JustDone, GPT Zero, Scribbr, and CopyLeaks. And I found one very cool tool that's totally different, and interesting for several reasons - I'll tell you about that one at the end.
To be clear - I'm not anti-AI. I use it every day for work and for fun. I am anti AI trying to pass as human. And I'm super anti bad actors using AI to cause social strive or to sell crappy products and services.
First, the test. In each one, I entered a recipe that I wrote, and one created by AI. Here's how they fared:
Grammarly
Grammarly - First, a caveat - I'm not sure if this tool is really free, or if they're going to ask me to subscribe at some point - but I've used it a few times. Copy text up to 1400 words and paste into a text box for an evaluation. Also, Grammarly has a humanizer - which I think is a little icky. I don't have a problem using AI - I do it all the time. But trying to hide that use on purpose - that's not cool.
Test results:
- My original recipe - 15% appears to be AI generated (Fail - but not horrible)
- The AI recipe - 16% appears to be AI generated (Fail - miserably)
Conclusion:
I'll probably ty this a few more times with different kinds of text, but so far, I'm not impressed.
JustDone
JustDone Ok, this one is slimy. They do have a free detector, but what they really want is to sell you a tool that will make AI feel more human. So, not a fan.
Test Results:
- My original recipe - 99% AI
- The AI recipe - 99% AI
Conclusion:
Total fail. Also, If I was actually looking for a humanizer... I'd want one that could recognize AI text first. So, even fails at the slimy parts.
GPTZero
GPTZero - While it does ask for a subscription with every scan, so far I haven't hit a free version limit. Based on my testing, this one is my favorite. It has a better user interface, and gave better results. It also doesn't appear to offer a humanizer - which I appreciate. There are a number of paid features, and if it continues to excel in my daily use - I might actually pay for these when I need them.
Test Results:
- My original recipe - 0% AI
- The AI recipe - 100% AI
Conclusion:
Perfect score.
Scribbr
Scribbr This one is actually free, with no subscription pop ups or pay walled options.
Test Results:
- My original recipe - 0% AI
- The AI recipe - 86% AI
Conclusion:
Good, but not perfect. It has a clean interface and no pay pressure. I can see why some would choose this over GPTZero. Totally worth testing.
CopyLeaks
CopyLeaks - Free, easy to use, and it has a browser extension for chrome. I love the idea of a browser extension, but this one failed my test. And the browser extension failed even when was on the AI site and copied the test material directly from it.
Test Results:
- My original recipe - 0% AI
- The AI recipe - 0% AI
Conclusion:
Fail - but a nice idea? May be worth retesting later to see if it's gotten better.
WeCatchAI
WeCatchAI - This is the totally different cool tool that I teased in my intro. It's gamified, crowd sourced AI detection. You join the community, then get to work with others to detect AI content. Members submit suspected AI content, then review the submitted content together. It's also gamified. Members get points for submitting sites and for reviewing sites. There's a leader board, and the rewards program even includes some cash!
I think this is interesting. You both learn how to spot AI and you provide a community service. I'll definitely be testing this out for the next couple of days.
Bottom Line
I'll be using GPTZero in my daily work, and I'll join WeCatchAI to skill up and have some fun.
