Former South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol sentenced over martial law declaration

Former South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to five years in jail for crimes related to his failed attempt to impose martial law in late 2024. The failed attempt plunged South Korea into political turmoil and led to his impeachment. The Seoul Central District Court found Yoon guilty of obstruction of official duties, abuse of power, falsification of official documents, and destruction of evidence. This sentencing is the first resolution of four trials related to the martial law declaration.
