Here is a simple explaination: System finds the best post not just based on diggs but other interactions as well and should really stand out of the crowd like not just trend but explode in terms of interaction. Each interaction like diggs, comments matters and once it breaches the dynamic threshold (which is based on interactions across the site) then that post qualifies as gem worthy and then first “N users”(which we keep tuning) to digg the post are given gems. That's how it works and that’s how you can find gems. NOTE: If no gems are given in a day that means no post exploded.
