Any strategies for growing communities that may have "missed the boat" on the most popular name?

It looks like there was a "land rush" for popular community names.

In my example, I was hoping to start 3dprinting here, but it got nabbed by someone who didn't even bother to make a post. So I went with instead.

Does anyone have tips to grow communities that may not have the "best" or "top" name here on digg?
