Mattresses aren’t BIFL.
Following the trend someone else started, I’m going to call out something that probably doesn’t belong here.
Mattresses aren’t BIFL.
I know they’re expensive and we all wish they lasted forever, but they just don’t work that way.
The stuff that actually matters (foam, latex, springs) breaks down. Support cores fail, you get body impressions, and suddenly the thing that’s supposed to help you sleep is doing the opposite.
Unlike a good cast iron pan or leather boots, you can’t really fix a mattress. You can’t swap out worn layers or repair dead coils without basically rebuilding the whole thing… and warranties sound nice but they almost never cover the gradual decline that actually happens.
There’s also the hygiene factor. Even if a mattress technically still works after 15 years… do you really want to sleep on it?
Plus, our bodies change. You gain or lose weight, develop a bad back, change how you sleep. A mattress that was perfect at 25 might be causing problems at 40. I mean, if something needs to adapt to your changing body, it’s not really a “buy it for life” item.
Mattresses are more like tires than tools. You want to buy a good one, but you’re going to need to replace it eventually. They’re just not in the same category as the stuff this sub was made for.
