A study by Johannes Gutenberg University reveals that the pre-Roman baths in Pompeii were extremely filthy, contaminated with lead, zinc, copper, and human waste, and only refilled once daily. The conditions improved significantly after the installation of an aqueduct in the first century AD, which supplied water from natural springs with lower levels of heavy metals and allowed for more frequent water changes.
