Fly Geyser
Fly Geyser is a striking geothermal formation in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, near the edge of the Fly Ranch. It was accidentally created in 1964 when a geothermal drilling operation failed to cap a well properly. Superheated water rich in minerals began to erupt, slowly building a cone of calcium carbonate. Over time, thermophilic algae gave the geyser its vivid reds, greens and yellows. Although often mistaken for a natural geyser, Fly Geyser is entirely man-made. It is not open to the general public, though limited guided tours are sometimes available.
