Do you read other books while working on a writing project or do you avoid other books? Why or why not?

For the first time while writing I'm finding myself reading in the evenings while at other times I'm working on my own writing project. I haven't done this before, and I wonder how other people navigate this. Do you find it alters your inner writing voice? If yes, for better or worse?
