Ancient interstellar comet to pass Earth on December 19
An ancient visitor from another star system will sweep past Earth on December 19 at a distance of approximately 170 million miles—far enough to pose no threat, but close enough to offer scientists an unprecedented opportunity to study the third confirmed interstellar object in history.
On December 19, 2025, interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS will make its closest approach to Earth at a distance of 170 million miles, offering a rare opportunity to observe a visitor from another star system. Discovered in 2025, 3I/ATLAS is the third confirmed interstellar object, moving at speeds of up to 153,000 mph and estimated to be between 7 and 14 billion years old. NASA, ESA, and other agencies have coordinated a multi-mission campaign to study the comet, revealing its rich composition and potential cryovolcanic activity. Despite its speed and distance, 3I/ATLAS poses no threat to Earth and will continue its journey outward, passing Jupiter in 2026 before leaving the solar system.
