Roku hacks

I remember in days of yore you could toggle something in the settings (demo mode3 maybe?) to prevent ads from appearing on the main screen. Roku shut it down, I'm guessing by altering how that setting worked, and once I gave up on getting it to work again I decided to just use the Chromecast whenever possible. I had forgotten about it until I saw this community, so I thought I'd ask the one other person here right now (lol) as well as future members: Are there any actual software hacks for the roku? It's a pretty closed system which is fine; we knew that when we bought it. Still, like the ad server hack it is possible to make it do things they didn't design it to do or hoped we wouldn't notice.
