Two Months After Cease-Fire, Israel Is Still Demolishing Gaza
According to a January 2026 New York Times investigation, Israel has demolished more than 2,500 buildings in the Gaza Strip since a ceasefire went into effect in October 2025. Utilizing satellite data and military footage, the report reveals that while the majority of these demolitions occurred in Israeli-controlled areas, dozens were carried out in zones where the Israeli military had pledged to halt operations and withdraw. Although the Israeli government maintains that the systematic destruction of these structures is essential for the long-term demilitarization of the enclave, the findings raise significant concerns regarding the fragility of the current peace plan and the permanent displacement of Gazan civilians.
Two months after a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas, Israel has demolished more than 2,500 buildings in Gaza, according to a New York Times analysis. Israel claims these demolitions are part of efforts to demilitarize Gaza, targeting tunnels and booby-trapped homes. However, the demolitions have occurred in areas under Israeli control as well as those under Hamas control, raising concerns about the agreement's enforcement and the extent of destruction.
