Muslim MP says 'hate speech' laws could soon be expanded

Muslim Labor MP Anne Aly has suggested that the federal government's new 'hate speech' laws could soon be expanded to cover 'islamophobia' and 'homophobia'. The Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026, expected to pass next week, aims to criminalise 'other types of hate' after advocacy groups complained the laws didn't go far enough. The bill also allows the government to ban organisations advocating for 'hate crimes' as 'Prohibited Hate Groups'.
