I have a background in science and engineering, so a very clear understanding of the Law of Conservation of Mass, and yet it was not until I actually started farming that it sank in how profoundly important it must be to return to the soil what we remove via crop harvesting, if we expect to harvest again the next season. Sunlight, water and carbon dioxide only get you so far when making a tomato. . . so when I finally felt that in my bones, I sought out permaculture for the first time at about age 50.
