Jakarta overtakes Tokyo as world's largest city according to UN

Jakarta has overtaken Tokyo as the world's largest city with a population of nearly 42 million, according to the United Nations. Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital, is also expected to surpass Tokyo by 2050, while Tokyo's population is projected to decline due to Japan's aging population. Nine of the ten most populous cities are in Asia, with Cairo being the only non-Asian city in the top ten. Urbanization is a defining force of our time, with the number of megacities quadrupling since 1975, and several more expected to reach the 10 million population mark by 2050.
