Guatemala declares state of siege after gang violence
Guatemala has declared a 30-day state of siege following a weekend of gang-related violence. Gang-affiliated inmates rioted in three prisons, leading to the deaths of seven police officers. President Bernardo Arevalo announced the state of siege, which can temporarily limit civil liberties and expand the power of security forces, to combat the criminal gangs. The state of siege requires congressional approval but can take effect before a vote.
