A Sea Lion taking a massive bite out of a 2,000lb Ocean Sunfish
The Ocean Sunfish (Mola mola) is the heaviest bony fish in the world, but it has a major weakness: it is incredibly slow and lacks a traditional tail fin. This makes them a frequent target for California Sea Lions, who have been known to "frisbee" these giants or, as seen here, simply take what they need. Because Sunfish have extremely thick, leathery skin and no real way to fight back, they often survive these initial encounters, continuing to swim even with massive wounds. It’s a brutal, prehistoric-looking display of the ocean's food chain in action.
