How to prevent my employer from forcing GPS/location access on a work device?
A few days ago, I started getting prompts on my company laptop/phone asking to allow location (GPS) access as part of a Microsoft sign-in / security process. It seems to require precise or continuous location data to “verify” the device.
I’ve been going back and forth with our helpdesk asking why this is necessary and whether it can be disabled. I’ve clearly stated that I consider this a privacy issue (especially since we’re in Europe, where this should actually matter). So far, the only answer I get is that it’s a “security measure.”
For me, this feels like a real invasion of privacy. Why should my employer need access to my GPS location, especially when I’m working remotely or using my own network? Even if it’s supposedly limited or anonymized, I don’t feel comfortable sharing where I am or where I go.
Does anyone here have experience with this? Is there a way to block or limit GPS/location access on work devices without breaking company policies? Any advice would be appreciated.
