Australia’s largest coal power plant to operate an extra two years to support national grid

Australia’s largest coal-fired power plant, Eraring, will remain operational until April 2029 to ensure the stability of the national energy grid. Origin Energy, the plant’s operator, extended its closure from 2025 to August 2027, and now to 2029. The New South Wales government and climate advocates have opposing views on this decision, with the former citing energy security and emissions reduction targets, and the latter calling it a setback for climate goals.
