Community Ownership on Digg

We want to clear up some confusion we’ve seen around community ownership on Digg. In nearly all cases, when you create a community on Digg, you own + manage that community.

We have no interest in undermining early builders who are helping shape the platform. In fact, our Community Names and Trademarks terms are designed to make clear that creators retain rights to their names + brands beyond Digg, and that we don’t prevent communities from using or growing those identities outside the platform. As far as I know, this is extremely rare for platforms like Digg.

However, there are a handful of high-profile community names that were reserved. During launch, a limited number of those names were available and shouldn't have been. This is on me, and I take full responsibility.

One of those was . I reached out to the community owner to explain the situation, let them know the community would be transferred to the intended owner, and offered to help them spin up a new community.

Since then, there have been a number of posts and comments on Digg from users asking for more information, so I thought it would be best to address the broader community rather than replying individually.

This is by no means intended to call out the previous owner. I just want to make sure everyone understands that this was a narrow edge case, not a general policy.

We deeply value early contributors + builders, and we want Digg to be a place where your effort is respected and protected.
