Anthropic is running out of compute and energy

"Quick! Everyone must pause now that we're on the lead! That or perhaps we get nationalized?! Either way plz we can't keep this up"

Funny how so many people read Anthropic is calling for a pause when they did NOT actually call for a pause.

Read what they said, carefully.

They want it both ways. They *don’t* actually want a pause - at least for now. Rather, they want to rush ahead, hinting at “least cautious actors” for justification.

Instead, they want people to talk about an “option” they don’t actually plan to take, and are unlikely to ever take. (More likely, they will like always hint at China, and continue rush ahead.)

It’s an incredible, cost-free piece of rhetoric — perfectly timed for the IPO.

Asking your competitors to pause development right after you file your S-1 is the single most effective moat-building exercise I've seen pitched as ethics.

Do they not realize the quiet period is for them, not homework they assign their competitors?

@unusual_whales Wonder how every AI lab discovers AI is dangerously powerful right after hitting a near-$1T valuation and filing for an IPO. "Please pause development" sounds a lot nobler when you're already in the lead.🤔😉

I hope @anthropic also does some legal research on how coordinating in an enforceable way to stop making better products might be a tad anticompetitive.

Our highest and most urgent national priority should be AI safeguards. The risks of AI weapons, pathogens, mass unemployment, surveillance, and even extinction must not continue to be largely ignored.

Big development - Anthropic is now advocating to build verification mechanisms to enable the option to pause AI development.
